Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Reception!
Our topic this Half Term is Ourselves. Our main priority is to familiarise the children with their new class and teacher to ensure each child feels happy and secure in their new environment.
This year, we have a number of adults working across the two Reception classes. There are two permanent members of staff in each classroom: Miss Revell and Miss Mykels in Green Reception and Miss Kelleher and Mrs Mustapha in Red Reception. We also have additional support across the year group from Mrs. Tildesley.
This term in Literacy, the children will explore stories, songs and rhymes linked into our weekly themes. Soon, they will begin to learn the letters and sounds of the alphabet through their daily Phonics work.
In Numeracy, we will begin the term with a focus on counting and the number system. The children will learn through a range of practical activities, songs and games. They will develop skills in counting objects, saying number names in order and recognising numerals to 20 and beyond. Our weekly themes will be linked closely into the Literacy and Phonics work. The children will become immersed in a new letter of the alphabet each day and will engage in practical activities which link to this letter.
There is lots you can do at home to support your child’s learning and so we would like to invite you to come to our Reception Parent Meeting on Wednesday 26th September at 2.45pm in the Sunshine Room, beside the Reception classrooms.
Here, we can talk you through what the children will be learning and give you ideas of activities you can do with your children outside of school. It is also an opportunity for you to meet all the teachers working with your children and ask any questions you have.
Family Phonics Workshops:
On Thursday 11th of October and Thursday 6th of December 2018 Mrs Moyler will be running Family Phonics Workshops in the Sunshine Room. This is a great opportunity to understand the phonics approach and how to best support your child’s reading and writing and to share great ideas for reading for pleasure. Mrs Moyler will share resources and strategies for supporting your child with phonics. We encourage all parents and carers to attend these workshops.
Each child has been provided with a book bag. We ask that the children bring in their book bags every day. Their book will be changed once a week with each child. Please leave a short comment in your child’s Reading Record Book once you have read with them so that we can make sure that they are on the most appropriate level book. We ask that you check your child’s book bag each day for letters and notices. If your book bag is lost, then a replacement bag will need to be bought from the school office.
The children eat lunch in the Sunshine Room. The lunchtime menu works on a 3 week Rota and is displayed in each classroom. Do feel free to have a look each day and talk to your child about what they will be having for lunch.
We do not have a designated PE lesson in Early Years because the children’s day is already so active. There is no need for your child to have a separate PE kit. However, please do make sure your child is wearing appropriate footwear to run around and have fun on the apparatus in our outside area. We also ask that you provide your child with a spare pair of clothes to keep on their peg as accidents do happen from time to time!
Outdoors for Early Years:
As part of our Early Years Curriculum the outdoors is another classroom, it is important that your child has appropriate and warm clothing- a coat, hat, gloves and a scarf for the colder days in Winter and as we’re now in Autumn a good coat for the rain and boots or wellington boots would be useful as we explore outdoors to develop each child’s learning.
Our Community Choir!
At John Donne we have a fantastic choir made up of parents and teachers. Come along and join us, whether you have formal experience of singing or just always fancied being in a choir, all are welcome! We meet each Thursday at 3.30pm – 4.30pm in the lower hall. We provide a free crèche for your children each week so you can relax and enjoy an hour of singing!
Please feel free to come and talk to your class teacher before or after school if you have any other queries or concerns. We look forward to a great year ahead and seeing you for our Reception parent meeting on Wednesday 26th of September 2018 at 2.45pm.
