Dear Parents and Carers,

Here is the information you will need for the Autumn Term in Year 5.

Miss Denny - Class Teacher

Ms Dzakpasu - Year 5 Teaching Assistant

Ms Lewandowska - Year 5 Teaching Assistant

Mr Williams - PPA cover

Mr Crane - PPA cover

Ms Brandi – Year 5 SEN support assistant

This term we welcome Ms Wild – student teacher- working with Red 5 until the February half-term. After the half-term, Red 5 will welcome back Ms Lea-Wilson – student teacher.

Our topic in Spring 1 is:

‘Shakespeare – Should we ever ask someone to do something we would not be willing to do ourself?’ The Power of reading book we will use to help us explore the issue is Macbeth.

Our topic in Spring 2 will be:

‘Environment- How could we overcome the effects of global warming on our local environment?’ The power of reading book we will use to help us explore the issue is Floodlands by Marcus Sedgewick.

Homework:

Children have an Independent learning book with a guided list of ideas about our topic. These are just ideas and children are free to explore the topic in other interesting and exciting ways should they choose.

Reading each day makes a difference to children’s learning and progress, so we expect each child to spend 10/15 minutes reading and to record this in their reading records daily. Parents are asked to sign their child’s record book. These will be checked weekly. Currently, we ask children to hand in their record books on Wednesdays in Red 5 and Thursdays in Green 5.

Spelling homework will be set every Tuesday. Children will be tested the following Tuesday. Children are expected to use a dictionary to check the meaning of the words and practice spelling them every day.

All children will be expected to practice their times tables and will be tested each Tuesday and told which times tables to focus on for the following Tuesday’s test.

Trips:

On Monday 24th February, we will be travelling to Camelot primary school to watch a production of Shakespeares Hamlet. More information will be sent out shortly. We are looking at a number of other possibilities for this term and will send out more information nearer the time.

PE kits:

Red 5 and Green 5 will both have PE on Tuesdays. This might change over the weeks. We will use the school’s text messaging service to update parents on any changes. Please ensure that

the office has your most up to date mobile number. Children should ensure that they bring in their PE kits on a Monday and leave them in school all week until Friday afternoons.

Other information:

Parents are reminded that school for Year 5 children starts at 8:45am. It is really important they are not missing out on the learning that takes place at this time.

Many thanks,

The Year 5 Team
