Red 1

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year! I hope you have all had a great return from your holidays.

Please find important information about the remainder of the term ahead:

Punctuality

School starts at 8:50 and finishes at 15:15. If you are unable to collect your child please contact the school office with details of who will be collecting them.

Reading/Book bags

Home reading makes a real difference to children’s learning and progress. At this stage in their schooling, reading with your child for 20 minutes every day is the best thing you can do to help them. When you read with your child, please sign the journal or write a comment about how they got on with the book. We are encouraging children to select books independently and in order to do so we will change books once a week. Your child will bring home one level appropriate book and two bedtime books. Please feel free to read the bedtime book to your child.

Medical

Please make sure the office has up to date details of any allergies or medical conditions your child has. Also, please ensure we have the correct contact details for you.

Name labels

Our school can get quite warm throughout the year and children may need to take their jumpers off at some stage in the day. Please help the Year 1 team and your child by marking their name clearly in all items of clothing.

PE

PE will continue to be every Tuesday. Your child needs to bring their PE kit each week including trainers, trousers, a t-shirt and jumper. Kits also need to be labelled. I am happy for your child to leave their P.E. kit in school during each half term.

Our Learning

Our topic for this term is all about William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. We will be taking part in weekly workshops run by a theatre practitioner from The Globe.

We will be going on a trip to visit a local theatre as part of our project where we will be looking for parent volunteers, details to follow.

In Maths we will be focusing on addition and subtraction, place value within 50, multiples of 2, 5 and 10 and measurement. Please take every opportunity to count with your child and recognise numbers in everyday life. By the end of Year 1, children need to be able to recognise o’clock and half past the hour times. It would also be very helpful if you could encourage your child to become familiar with coins and notes and get used to paying for items costing up to £1.00

Please ensure your child brings their book bag and has an appropriate jacket/coat with them in school every day.

Homework

Along with access to Doodle Maths, your child will be sent home with Spellings homework on a weekly basis. Spellings will be sent home with your child every Friday and practiced in class the following Friday. This will allow your child a full week to practice and learn the words. Homework is not to be handed in.

If you have any questions, please feel free to speak to myself, Ms Lina, or Ms Ankra.

Kind regards,

Miss Dickinson and the Red 1 Team
